Second Round Bidding Std : Bridge Online

index

If you open the bidding and I change suit, then you MUST bid again. That is because my points are unlimited so we might have game.

Support partner's suit

If you have a fit for partner's suit then you shoudl tell partner the good news immediately. You promise 4 trumps when you raise partner's suit.

Opener raises partner's suit
• 13-15 TP raise one level
• 16-18 TP jump raise
• 19 TP bid game

♠ A2
KJT2
KJ
♣ Q7642

SouthWestNorthEast
1♣P1P
2

On this hand you can raise to 2. Partner has four hearts and 6+ HCP. A raise to 2 by the opener shows 4-card support and 12-15 TP.

♠ A2
KJT2
KJ3
♣ A764

SouthWestNorthEast
1♣P1P
3

A raise to 3 by the opener shows 4-card support and 16-18 TP.

♠ A2
KJT2
AK3
♣ A764

SouthWestNorthEast
1♣P1P

With 19-21 TP, you're strong enough to go to game.

Bid a new suit

If you can't support partner, bid a new suit if possible. Remember that you should describe your hand as accurately as you can. It's better to bid a new suit rather than rebidding your first suit.

Bid a new suit
• 12-18 TP bid a new suit
• 19-21 TP jump in a new suit

♠ 2
KJ3
KQJ54
♣ QJ64

SouthWestNorthEast
1P1♠P
2♣

Bidding a new suit gives partner more information than rebidding a suit, so so it's better to bid 2♣ on this hand rather than 2. This is NOT a limit bid, and you could have up to 18 TP.

Why can't you be more specific and limit the strength of your hand by bidding 3♣? The reason is that a jump in a new suit at the 3-level is forcing to game.

Bidding a new suit at the 2-level also implies that your first suit was 5 cards long.

♠ 2

♣ AJ64

3♣

This time you can jump, as you are strong enough to force me to game, even if I have only 6 TP. A jump in a new suit shows 19.

Bid notrumps

If you can't support partner, or bid a new suit, you can bid notrumps. This shows that you have a balanced hand.

Opener bids notrumps on the second round
1NT = 13-14 HCP
2NT = 18-19 HCP
3NT = long strong suit with honors in the other suits

♠ A7
KT62
K75
♣ QJ64

SouthWestNorthEast
1♣P1♠P
1NT

Your hand is balanced, but was too weak to open 1NT. Bid a suit first and then bid 1NT at your second turn. That shows 12-14 HCP and is balanced. I know you don't have 15-17 because then, you would have opened 1NT.

♠ K2

K42
♣ AKQ62

SouthWestNorthEast

3NT

A rebid of 2NT shows 18-19 HCP.

♠ K2
K2
K32
♣ AKQ642

A rebid of 3NT is a special bid and shows a long, strong suit with honors in the other suits.

Rebid the first suit

You can't support partner, nor bid a second suit, nor bid notrumps this time. You only have one choice which is to rebid your own suit.

Opener rebids first suit
• minimum rebid = 13-15 TP
• jump rebid = 16-18 TP
• bid game = 19-21 TP

♠ 92
AK
KQJ543
♣ 532

SouthWestNorthEast
1P1♠P
2

You'll have to rebid your diamonds, to show one long suit and nothing else. Rebidding your own suit at a minimum level , promises 12-15 HCP and usually shows a 6-card suit.

♠ A2
AK
KQJ543
♣ 532

SouthWestNorthEast
1P1♠P
3

You still have only one suit to rebid here, but your hand is stronger. Jump to 3 to show a 6-card suit and 16-18 TP.

♠ A3
AKQJ543
KJT
♣ 9

SouthWestNorthEast
1P1♠P
4

With a very strong hand and only one suit which you want to be trumps, you can jump to game. This shows 19-21 HCP and a long solid suit.
You are not interested in anything but hearts, so tell partner the news that you have a great suit and a strong hand.

Opener's Rebids
• Support partner's suit
• Bid a new suit
• Bid notrumps
• Rebid the first suit
